In Response To: Revised 2-1 Ats Opening Roll Heuristic (Jason Lee)

Knowing how foggy things can get in bg opening theory, I had rather low expectations of how 'tidy' the boundary would be, and so I considered myself rather lucky to have found an equation as mathematically simple as y=ax+c that could produce a reasonably good level of accuracy without being too unwieldy for practical use, particularly as the two constants I found are virtually integers. In other words, the word 'messy' in this context is very relative. There are some bumps along the boundary line, but I was relieved to see that the associated errors caused by flattening them out with a y=ax+c device were smaller than I had expected. It will be interesting to see how bumpy some other opening rolls are in this respect. It may be that 2-1 is one of the tidier ones.
