it is not always right to take a crossover, especially if there is little chance of a miss and you leave yourself an odd number of outside crossovers after the play

I learned from David Presser that during race bear in it's usually correct to use one number to cross over and use another number to improve inside distribution if this leaves an odd number of checkers outside our home board. This rule of thumb works great in practice.
