Take a 3rd checker off and all of a sudden a different two blot play gets a lot better. Why?

In the first position white has a spare on the deuce point. After 4/3* 7 numbers blot (42,43,32 and 33). After 5/3* only 5 numbers blot (52,43 and 33).

In the second position the same amount of numbers blot since 5/3* now blots on 51 and 31 and 4/3* only blots on 41.
