There is something unsatisfactory about almost every move Blue might make!

  • By advancing the anchor to the 22pt, Blue would prime himself.
  • Holding both the bar point and midpoint is somewhat redundant because they are separated by 6 pips.
  • Similarly, making the 2pt would involve the redundancy of owning the 8pt.
  • Making the 2pt also creates the dreaded TMP (too many ponits) problem.
  • Switching from the 7pt to the 5pt would leave a fragile structure in which the midpoint might have to be sacrificed soon thereafter.
There are other possibilities that do not involve moving in pairs. With so many choices, I doubt I could find the proper move over the board, let alone the correct explanation! Here, I finally decided to keep the bar point and play 13/11(2). For the final two 2s, I advanced the anchor.

This position can be reached by a number of different sequences. That fact caused me to conclude that it is probably more common than many other eighth-roll positions. Is the notion of commonality useful? Do certains sorts of postions deserve more study because they are more common than others? Perhaps, but in practice, I am not sure how to take advantage of the observation.

The first eight of these are all permutations of each other. 54H and 63H are interchangable, as are 54O and 63O, while 31P and 52P transpose.

  • 32S-54H-65R-63O-31P-61P-52P-22
  • 32S-63H-65R-54O-31P-61P-52P-22
  • 32S-63H-65R-63O-31P-61P-52P-22
  • 32S-54H-65R-54O-52P-61P-31P-22
  • 32S-54H-65R-63O-52P-61P-31P-22
  • 32S-63H-65R-54O-52P-61P-31P-22
  • 32S-63H-65R-63O-52P-61P-31P-22
In this group, 54H and 63H are interchangable, while 61P transposes with 54O or 63O.
  • 32S-54H-65R-61P-52P-54O-31P-22
  • 32S-54H-65R-61P-52P-63O-31P-22
  • 32S-63H-65R-61P-52P-54O-31P-22
  • 32S-63H-65R-61P-52P-63O-31P-22
Next come the variations where Blue hits with 43H = 13/10 8/4*.
  • 32S-43H-65R-54O-31P-63P-52P-22
  • 32S-43H-65R-54O-52P-63P-31P-22
So far, everything has been perfectly played. In the next sequence, slotting with 51$ = 14/9 6/5 instead of moving D = 14/9 11/10 is an error of about 8 millipoints.
  • 32S-54H-65R-61P-51$-63P-64O-22
  • 32S-63H-65R-61P-51$-63P-64O-22
In this last one, moving 64O = 13/9 10/4 instead of coming under the gun with 64C = 24/20 10/4 is an error of something like 17 millipoints.
