I can't say I did well on my play in the variation position either. Two more pips makes the running play nearly right. 13/8 6/3 doesn't look bad to me, but that is still the wrong idea. The right play breaks the 8pt to make the 3pt, leaving a 3 shot apparently doesn't matter too much.
