Are you playing ACOL? Thats core to what I used to play.

The other challenge you face is that the 1NT reply indicates 6-9pts, no 4 card major, balanced hand. So, with 16pts, you could have game easily, and to deny that opportunity would be cheap for your opponents. I think bidding a suit thats not a negative and isnt at least 4 cards is just plain bad - but thats just my opinion, often criticized.

If you do have an unbalanced hand then you need a better more expressive system to demonstrate that - something like multi 2 diamonds, or weak 2's, jump shifts etc.
