2S only shows 4, although you can't have a 4-4 Spade fit here 2S helps to identify a) Inadequately held suits for 3NT b) potential side suit fit for slam or 5D c) Maybe even a 4-3 fit for 4S

Some play 3S as 6-5, but bidding 2S followed by 3S shows that, I play 1D 1N 3S as an auto splinter with solid Diamonds
