Just because you are in the doubling window doesn't mean you must double. For money the doubling window is 50-75% (let's not get into live cube for simplicity), but you don't double as soon as you are a slight favorite, don't you? You want to give as efficient a cube as possible -- meaning a cube which is close to the point of last take. So, you need to estimate your market losers. In volatile positions you have plenty of market losers, so you double with smaller advantage since your opponent might not be able to take a cube next roll. Long races have low volatility, so you can wait to get closer to the point of last take.
