Originally I proposed the class order 3, 2, 1 as you say, but received numerous comments making the case that this was counter-intuitive for most people who expect a numbering order with "1" at top, eg, educational certificates, diplomas and degrees, place order in competitions. 1 = 1st = Best. I had to agree and consulted numerous people on this issue who with one exception concurred.

The list of titles are essentially based on a split of four grade bands, Intermediate, Advanced, Master, Grandmaster, with each divided into 3 classes, with all PR benchmarks derived from an exponential curve where the ratio of any two adjacent benchmarks remains constant. If expansion beyond this range was required it would naturally be done by adding grade bands each with three classes. For example, B1, B2 and B1 at one end and S1, S2 and S3 at the other.

Note that the Danish Norm-based system of masterships include the title Super Grandmaster, and so far Karsten Bredahl is the only player to be so honoured.
