For individual sports, I have to put gymnastics on top of my list. I don't think there is a finer all-around athlete than a top gymnast to combine strength, coordination, balance, grace, and guts. Plus the gymnast must develop and use every part of his body perfectly whereas most other sports require some specialization.
On (US) NBC TV during the ('slow-season') summer months there is a weekly show called American Ninja Warrior which is taken from a similar, long running show in Japan -- Sasuke. There are European versions of the show and even international competitions (US vs. Japan vs. Europe). Basically contestants go through obstacle courses and both how many sections are successfully traversed and the time it takes determine placing and advancement to later rounds.
In the US, are appear to be three types of cross-sport/activity athletes who excel at this competition: rock climbers, pole vaulters, and gymnasts. All of these sports/activities put an premium on strength/weight ratio as well as requiring both upper body and lower body strength plus agility, flexibility, and balance. Improvisation under great pressure is also an added value skillset, which possibly gives rock climbers even more of an edge.
