More posts supporting why I never travel without headphones and why I believe they'll never be banned. The pluses far outweigh the minute minuses that people bring up.

As for your assigned board suggestion I am absolutely all for it. I have been to a few tournaments where boards are assigned and when the draw comes out you not only see your opponent but what your table assignment or board assignment is. This way you don't have to wander around and search for your opponent. Head to your table and wait. No hassle. I don't know why this isn't used more often.
