Is pay to play the only way to hold tournaments?

I think growing over the board backgammon is a challenge. : 1. Events have to be cross promoted by corporate sponsors. F.e,Seems to me not many BG events are held at casinos, which are pretty much everywhere now days. If a TD can bring 100 players to a casino it will add 5-10k to the prize money. TDs have to go hard at pitching for new sponsor money as the No1 priority.

2. There need to be a lot more regional tournaments. There should be a monthly event in every decent size city. It doesn't have to be big, but it has to be regular. These smaller events are the best way to introduce new players to tournament BG.

3. The transition between online backgammon and OTB with real dice can be improved. Poker is a good model to go on.
