After first seeing taper_Mike's post of Bill Calton's non-position, I first read this as *white* to play this 22!

Surprisingly I find the white decision more difficult. 4/2*/off, 4/off seems to win the most gammons, but exposes a checker. 5/1(2) is very safe (since blue is probably running next turn anyway, and even stay/shot-leaving-double/hit is going to leave us a favorite much of the time. OTOH, it does almost nothing for the gammon race which is the main consideration.

Every other play leaves a shot and seems to be dominated by hitting and ripping two.

I hit and rip two.
