I disagree with the notion that 13/11 trades one point-maker for another. I see playing 13/11 as adding two point-makers for our bar point.

I see your point. 64, 61, and 41 all could be used to make the bar point after playing 13/11. The first two of those would require relinquishing the midpoint, and leaving a blot behind. With our spare still on the midpoint, 61 is the only one of those three rolls that would make the bar point. It would do so, however, in complete safety, while leaving the midpoint intact. When the spare is shifted to the 11pt, 41 does the same things.

Moving a back checker up to the 21pt is not a panacea. The Dillies will have 10 POH numbers that often spell trouble. Several of them, however, would mean leaving return shots on the bar point, and almost all of them would leave a gap on the 20pt. In most cases, we would have the Dillies out-boarded even after they made their 4pt.

What about the other 26 rolls? Most of them work out nicely for us.

Bringing a spare to the 11pt potentially adds 41 and 64 to the list of productive rolls. That’s 4 numbers. Moving up to the 21pt, and surviving the POH threat, adds many more than 4 numbers.

  • Any 3 anchors.
  • Large rolls esacpe.
  • Something like half our rolls hit back when the Dillies hit loose. If they dare to hit loose, the Dillies may find themselves in a hitting contest where they are greatly out-boarded.
  • Even in the worst case scenario, i.e., when the Dillies point on our heads, we usually end up with the better board.
Another way to look at this is positionally. Except for our rear checkers, all our checkers are pretty much right where we want them. It’s time to move the back checkers. Aren’t we planning to move them anyway on the next turn? If not, are we planning to bury the valuable spare we move to the 11pt by taking it to safety in the home board?

Obviously, I could be wrong here, but I still very much like moving a checker to the 21pt.

Mike
