what am I missing here?

Although they both have valid points, I think that the other two responses to your question miss the main point, Scotty. When you go from winning a game to winning a gammon, you gain (1 X the value of the cube). When you go from winning a game to losing a game, you go from +(1 X the value of the cube) to minus(1 X the value of the cube), so the difference is 2 X the value of the cube. White winning 3.5% more games is worth 14 points per hundred games (3.5 X 2 X 2), not 7 points. This is why the gammon value in a money game is 0.5, not 1.0 .
