However, I can see a pattern where there is a large rise, followed by a substantial drop, then plateau for several months. Then the process repeats itself.

I suspect this is a healthy pattern. When you learn a new concept, you have a tendency to over apply it. I remember going into a huge slump after I read Magriel for the first time. I learned all these new ideas about anchors and splitting and bold vs. safe, but it took some time for me to realign my sights and learn when and how to apply the principles I'd picked up.

Buying a new tool doesn't make you a better carpenter. You have to spend some time with it and learn how to use it.
