The back story on this incident, as I understand it, is that Quayle was reading the questions and answers from a deck of cards the teacher had prepared. The word was misspelled on the card. Reportedly, it looked funny to Quayle and he made a questioning gesture to the teacher, who affirmed the incorrect spelling. Not as sexy a story when told that way, however.
