A surprising (to me) save-the-gammon play

I was surprised that the top plays included 10/5 wasting a pip (or two pips in the case of 10/5 8/5). I was also surprised how much worse is the autopilot play 13/8 9/6. Can anyone explain why 10-5 is so much stronger?
