When I lived in Chicago there was a largish small group that ate together quite often. The core would have been me, Paul & Mary Franks, Phil Simborg (with and without Randee), and Stu Katz. When the check came I would add a generous tip (ex-cab driver that I am) and divide by the number of people at the table, then tell everyone what they owed. If people joined us, as often happened at tournaments, we let them know that was how it was done. If someone had a problem with that (and if someone was on tight money and eating like a sparrow we understood) and wanted a separate check, they asked for it in advance. With one exception that makes for a good story no one every questioned the system, and a fine time was had by all.

These days I routinely ask for separate checks on quiz nights. I spend more than anyone else, and I tip, which isn't really customary here.
