I'm suspicious of that reasoning as well, but here's a slightly different opponent-based strategy that I think is valid.

If you know your opponent well and know that she tends to take too deeply, then you should delay doubling slightly. The computer says you should double because it thinks you're going to lose your market, but since some of the alleged "market-losers" don't in fact lose your market against this particular opponent, it's not really a double yet.

(Similarly if you know your opponent tends to drop too quickly, then you may want to double even when the computer says ND if you think your opponent may drop. But I think everybody understands this principle.)
