Anyway this is somewhat a different principle - you're sacrificing equity to decrease/increase variance, not to provoke opponent to make a blunder

True they are different. But they're both attermpts to try to gain real-world equity by making sub-optimal - from XG pov - cube plays - (as is Timothy's example of cubing later/earlier vs late takers/early droppers). Of course they can all be misused and end up costing rather than gaining equity. But is this strategy more likely to be successful if applied correctlu than my earlier example?
