Away scoring

Agreed. If we want backgammon to be more of a spectator sport, we need to have the score be kept in a way that the numbers go up when somebody wins a point. That's how it rolls with every spectator sport I can think of at this moment, and I think it's more intuitive to a typical sport-watcher to have it be that way.
I also think it's of more interest to backgammon-watchers who are also players to know how long the match has been going on when they sit down to watch a game or two. As Jason noted, it actually is more interesting to see the close ending of a 25-pointer, presumably in some main event, than to watch two people who lost in the first round of the Main play a blitz match to 5 while they wait for their conso matches.
