8/1 seems to retain the best OF coverage and I'll go with it as well.

I think that's what makes it baffling. It's fairly east to see that the right idea here is to maintain as much contact as possible, and normally burying a checker on the ace doesn't help maintain contact. But here it does provide a lot of (the most?) contact.

I didn't consider that move because dumping checkers behind their runner is not the usual way to maximize contact - but here the outfield checkers are already well placed and moving them weakens coverage, so make the play that keeps the coverage intact. Makes sense to me.
