Thanks also for your inputs Keene and Casper

Thanks for the tip - the acepoint was grudgingly made after early awkward double 5s.
OTB I played the 9th best move - 17/12*/8 thinking I didn't want to let him have more ammo to strengthen his board and hopefully let him crunch a bit to his less useful advanced homeboard points with his reduced resources (7 chequers).
I can now see why this was a blunder.. hitting 17/12*/8 gave him a chance of making my 2 point (which he obliged - a horrid 4 prime in my homeboard) and did not extend my prime from the back.

I just found an sgf backup file on my hard drive.
After my blunder, he immediately shipped me a recube.
I took this 4 cube, made my 9 point and he was forced to advance to his 1,2 and 3 points (slotting 4) with his 7 free chequers.
He got a late hit and scrambled but couldn't re-make his 6 point in time.
After my trying to run this last chequer and being hit a couple of times I eventually rolled a double 6
After a few more moves I sent him an 8 cube which he dropped.

Interesting that you and Hominid mention that you like 17/8 (no hit). You were not discouraged by the rollouts above ranking this 6th, 4th and 3rd? I guess it's like Keene says: 'listen to the human'.
