How the delegates might select the Giants

In Response To: Here is a suggestion for a modern Giants List (Phil Simborg)

Here is a suggestion on how the delegates might vote and select the top 32, but again, the delegates will decide on the methodology during the first 6 months of their existence.

The leader will ask every delegate to independently select 10 people they think should be considered to be in the top 10 in the world (Level A) and 10 more they think should be considered for the next 10 places (Level B) and 10 more they think should be considered to be among the top 32 (level C) on the list and submits them to the director.

The delegates are asked to keep all voting and lists confidential, but they are allowed and encouraged to talk to people they believe are highly knowledgeable to help them make their recommendations. Also, there might be a restriction on the number of people from their own country they can recommend for each of the 10 places (maybe no more than 2 from their own country.)

The director gives the entire group the list of everyone nominated for the three levels and asks the delegates to choose three people from each group that they think should not be in that group and should be knocked down to the next group lower. And the delegates should also be asked if they can think of any other candidates, up to 2 each, that were not on the list at all that possibly should be added to group C.

The leader then revises the lists by dropping down or removing anyone from each section that was suggested to be removed or lowered by at least two delegates, and he adds new names to the list.

Then the leader sends out the remaining nominees for each of the three levels.

The delegates then vote for number 1-10 in each level. The leader of the group does not vote as he will use his vote to break any ties. The top 5 vote getters in order, for Level A shall be the top 5 people on the final Giants List. The second 5 players in Group A become numbers 6-10 on the list. The 5 top players in Level B become 11-15 and so on.

The director can also ask the group to send their “confidential” comments relative to non-skill factors that are in the criteria that should be strongly considered to remove someone from the list (caught cheating or horrible sportsmanship etc.). If the director gets a request based on this criteria, without naming the person raising the objection, he polls the rest of the delegates privately to see if there are at least 2 other delegates who agree that this person should be removed from the list because of said reasons. If there are, the name is then completely removed from the list. When the voting is complete, the director will publish the list.

Who voted for whom, and whether or not the leader did any tie-breaking, is never revealed. Anyone dropped from the list because of poor sportsmanship or cheating is never revealed, the person is simply not named on the list or as having been a candidate for the list. In addition to the 32 final Giants (All Stars) a list of all the other players who were nominated (candidates) but did not make it into the top 32 will be listed in alphabetical order.
