bearing off question--no David, and why?

You asked a good question, so the best thing to do is find out. I put another checker on the 6 point and it was still right to play 4/3, so that must not be the reason.

While I do appreciate the responses, I still am not clear on why 4/3 is better than 2/1. I can do different variations with different numbers of checkers on both sides of the board and see when it gets closer and when it changes, but I am not smart enough to come up with a logical reason or rule of thumb I can stick in my noggin and use in future positions, and this is what I am looking for.

I used to think, "Sometimes you just have to memorize the play and not ask why." I quickly learned that there is too much to memorize and why is all that is important if you want to improve.

So, again, WHY????
