Headphones—just the opposite

The main reason some people say they will not go to a tournament that bans headphones or that allows dice on the checkers or that has legal moves is precisely because we don’t have standard rules and they are hoping that the TD’s will listen to their threats snd make the rules their way. If the TD does that he will then lose the players who threaten the opposite. Its a no-win situation for the TD and the players. Also players know they cant attend every tournament anyway so they will pick the ones with the rules they like.
If we have international rules then those players will come to X number of tournaments even if there sre a few rules they don’t like because THEY HAVE NO CHOICE. If you enjoy backgammon and wuit the gsme becsuse they allow people to wear headphones, or because you hste dice on the checkers, or because you hste clocks or whatever, you probsbly were not very committed to play backgammon and would very likely find some other reason to quit.
There is not a game or sport in the world where everyone likes every rule. That is impossible. But every legitimate game and sport has basic rules that are the same everywhere because consistency is critical to eliminate ambiguity and arguments and misunderstsndings and to assure the competition is fair for sll no matter where you play.
Backgammon desperately needs this, and once the rules are firmly established, even though we will all never be completely hapoy with the rules, we will still love the game snd learn to get used to the fact that, just like everything else in life where we must deal with st least one other person, WE CAN’t have everything our way!
