When I first started playing in the US Othello National Championship, I remember watching the two superstars of the era, David Shaman and Brian Rose, winning every game against everyone else. They made it look so easy. I looked forward to the day when I knew more about the game, like they did, so I would no longer have to work so hard at the board. Some time within the next five years, I came to understand that these two were actually working harder at the board than any of the rest of us. It was a big part of their edge.

Neil's comments confirm that this is true of backgammon as well. The best players are working harder at the board than the wannabes. It is a big part of their edge.
