Surprising opening replies

To me, two of the most surprising results of Stick's rollouts are:
1. a good way to play 61 in response to an opening 24/21 24/20 is 13/7 6/5*;
2. a good way to play 41 in response to an opening 13/8 24/22 is 13/8.
Is there an intelligible explanation for these plays? Play #1 in particular seems crazy: 25 rolls hit, several others anchor. Is the compensation really that large?
By the way, on a slightly different topic, I finally posted the 5184-game rollout to the "tricky decision" I posed last week. I mention this because it was long enough ago that many people may not otherwise bother to scroll down that far the message list to see it.
