Only two legal plays

I apologize to those of you who prefer not to be shown a rollout up front, but in the (money-game) position below there are only two legal plays, so with QF you would immediately know what the rollout result was anyway.
Anyway, my question is, is hitting really that bad here? I don't understand why. It leaves the same number of return shots as not hitting, and gains a tempo. What am I missing? Or is GNU not playing the position properly?
