And, I assume, if a field goal would put you up by an extra score, such as going from 7 to 10...

Unless you're playing the Saints. :) Twice in the last three weeks NO's opp was leading by 7 and needed a chipshot field goal late to go up by 10. Washington's kicker and Dallas's kicker both missed. It eventually cost the Redskins the game but the Cowboys were able to force a fumble at midfield on the Saints late drive to seal the win.

Just like at BG, every rule has its exception.
