I like it because you only have to add up a few numbers, (that usually end in a zero), and you actually end up knowing both numbers, not just the difference. You also get to count large numbers of the checkers (usually 10 of them) in one swoop. This system takes almost no 'mental arithmetic'.
If it is hard to remember the first number, use your hands to remember it: (extend a finger in order to represent 1-5, extend all fingers but one to represent 6-0, left hand is 10s digit, right hand is 1s digit.)
