Occasionally useful in backgammon is squaring numbers, and I had to drill at that too.

If you can square (and divide) then you can square-root. This trick is also in the Benjamin+Shermer book. The Kleinman-->CGWC (cubless game winning chance) algorithms use the square root function.

I think we are digressing away from Jim's initial query, but that's allowed here.
