I also like the cluster counting method that Greg referenced. But Practice, Practice, Practice is the best advice. I wish I did more of it myself.

One thing I will do to practice is that when looking at positions in books (I particularly like Chris Bray's articles from the Independent) or even playing online, I will take a moment and manually count and check the counts reported by either the computer or book. I get good feedback that my counting skills are improving and also are accurate.
