Opinions of Chicago Open Format & Entrance Fee

The May 28-31 Chicago Open has an interesting format:

$300 entrance fee puts you into an 8-man group. The winner of the 8-man group wins nothing, but makes the playoffs.

$60 rebuys puts you into another 8-man group. Again, the winner makes the playoffs. There are 4 (!) rebuy sessions throughout the weekend.

The way I see it, equity-wise everyone is forced to rebuy (until they qualify), so everyone is pretty much committed to $540 in entrance fees.

This should generate some big prizes, which is great for you experts & high rollers. But for non-experts and low rollers (like me) the $540 is kinda steep.
