That is not totally satisfactory either. Realizing on your own that the cube is coming is part of OTB play.

Right, which is why I'd have to say the way we're doing it is probably as good as it's going to get. I'm still open to other suggestions, though!

Again, I want to emphasize that this is supposed to be primarily a learning exercise, not a contest between a pile of silicon and a pile of carbon. Whereas what we're doing is probably quite unsatisfactory for a competition, it's not bad for learning.
