Should they have kept the punt? -- OT

In Response To: NFL Sunday critical field goals -- OT (Chuck Bower)

San Francisco punted on 4th & 6 at the Giants' 49 (during the third quarter, trailing by 3). The punt was downed at the 7, but the Giants were called for running into the kicker. SF declined the penalty and kept the excellent field position that resulted from the punt, but I suspect they should have accepted the penalty and rekicked gone for it on 4 & 1, now at the 44.

Cue conventional wisdom about "never taking a punt off the board". (Okay, maybe not.)
