I think your rule of thumb is no good. Basically you are saying that contact does not help at all except if there is a prime or closeout (or the like).

Playing here with effectively very few checkers means you may be forced to do a play that you really would rather not do. I can easily see how two men can get closed out so I disagree with it not being a bit gammonish.
