Hockey ruling(?) -- OT

I think a concern for player safety is a good thing.

It is interesting, however, to compare how the NBA treats a much more serious problem than a uniform or equipment issue. In that league, a player can tear his Achilles tendon, and they just leave him lying on the floor while the fast break speeds away towards a 5-on-4 score.

In hockey, the ref helps erase a similar 5-on-4 advantage when he gives assistance to a player (who is not injured) in getting off the ice. In the video Mike linked, there is even a suggestion that the ref pushed the player he was helping in the way of the play that was underway.

It is also a bit ironic to be talking about player safety in a league that encourages/tolerates bare-knuckle fighting, but that's another subject.

Mike
