i'm a fish and can take it. I like being a fish.
ok back to pool again, after "The Color of Money" movie came out in 86 the pool rooms swelled up with fish. Fishing among the better players was a fantastic sport and paid well, a few of the fish ended up becoming world beaters. However most of the fish swam away and pool has been on the decline ever since. its pretty much dead.
so what if we didn't go "Fishing" from 86-89? I'm not sure, probably there would be a few more people stick around.
however while its a nice thought its contrary to human nature the strong feed on the weak.
if the word "fish" was removed from everyone's vocabulary and the fish** were put in their own little tank/bubble to be protected. Then yes there would probably be more players. But thats kinda hard to do.
So let the fish get eaten, and the ones who survive just might turn into a 20' Great White someday-ya never know.
**sorry for being a hypocrite

on a serious note if it made economic sense for "Hobby" level players to play each other, people with no intention of getting better it would work. I borrowed the word "Hobby" from German pool league players, they have Hobby Leagues there and there. They play for trophy's and it works. And the derogatory word "Fish" isn't part of their vocabulary(I don't speak German) because nobody is looking to rob them in a match for $. They are not money players at all. And there is nothing wrong with that.
