Since i see only Phil and Jacob tried to give answer on your question,I will add several things,as I myself lived several years from online backgammon. 1)May be most important thing is that there is no safe and secure backgammon site to play for money. There are several fraud sites, which you can play, they offer huge stakes too,but there is not enough bad players around, and the these sites are far from safe to play.So even if you find the high-stake fish and score big,on the next day you are going to wonder if they will pay at all. 2)Obviously for a new safe and secure site to appear,it requires lots of investment, which nobody nowadays wants to make.It requires also at least some of the support to really have an understanding of the game,so cheaters/bots,rating manipulators would be banned pretty fast. That's actually the easiest part, but a site will have a lot of current expenses like staff salaries,It company payments,Regulator payments....etc,which makes any investors turn away. 3)Regulation is definitely a big problem too,not only the US,but many other countries too.Almost all countries, which are considered as fish wells are not allowed to play online, which of course is a disaster for any backgammon pro. 4)Rake and bots are actually never been such a problem.Yes,rake was average to high before,it's same nowadays, but if you have enough games on good stakes it won't ever be a problem.Bots are manageable too,but you will need some pros in the support. It's not that hard and expensive to manage bots,a wealthy investors are much harder to find. 5)Another issue that backgammon community is doing nothing for the game to survive. Most of the best players are ready to show you how the played 1pr or 2pr,than to really care about the game itself.May be some of the really best and most famous can make some decent profit, because they might get free rooms in the hotel,or free entrance, but all others are playing the game mostly for fun and for challenge. The thing is that even that will disappear very soon, because it can easily be seen that worthy tournaments with decent added money can be counted on the fingers of 1 hand, and then even the best won't make any money. 6)Honestly in the developed countries, the average income is more that you can earn with really huge efforts in backgammon,so for citizens of US or Denmark for example,a regular job is much more profitable(and it doesnt require flying huge distances,or playing absolutely fraud online sites). Not to mention that your skill in backgammon have to be really very high, including everyday practise. 7)The truth of earning really well is written well-enough by Phil Simborg. You need private games, with lot of cash included, and you need these private games over and over. But that is a pretty closed circle, where you can't get in by chance. You need someone to invite you,and to like you,to continue inviting you.Of course, there is always the chance to find some wealthy fish on a live tournament, but it's very, very slim, may be same like to hit big in the lottery.
