Rules of Thumb to avoid crunching?

It is not only about the opening moves, but especially later in the game that the 'race when ahead' theme becomes important. After all, during the first moves of the game the race leads are generally not significant, these become more pronounced after rolling doublets, hitting checkers, dancing numbers, etc.
