Thank you for your input again Mike and Casper. This discussion has been very illuminating for me (learning more about rollouts and backgames). And I do feel that your heuristics will improve my chances when I encounter future backgames.
>> before using b.rol, I usually run ALL plays through a 3-ply analysis. That has the effect of eliminating the Move Filter as a problem.
Thanks for this tip!
Re- what to do about providing a conclusion to my quiz position: I will try and summarize what you have said above rather than lauding any single 'best move' and give brownie points to those that chose moves that immediately work towards said M.O.
In a way, my blunder worked out well; my initial mistake generated a takeable 4 cube whilst I was holding approx 41% equity and had fairly high gammon chances. Fortunately I was later able to capitalise on this.
>> I am using GnuBg 1.04
I am using v 1.05.000-mingw 32-Bit 20150725. Not sure if this accounts for the difference in results.
I think I followed your instructions to create b.rol correctly. I opened my b.rol with Notepad++ and saved it as a txt file which should make the internals easier to compare: I uploaded resulting txt file to
https://www.dropbox.com/s/1gxhu3dk6v5dnvl/b.rol.txt?dl=0
if you are not already exhausted by this discussion and want to compare with how your b.rol looks when viewed as a txt file.
