In Response To: OT - Trivia Question du Jour (Stick)

I was afraid my question wouldn't be clear and given the responses obviously it wasn't. I tried to clarify with an unacceptable answer but that didn't help too much. We can invent a wild variety of scenarios for any given game/sport where you'd rather be the team technically trailing at the moment. That wasn't what I meant. I'll give you the answer I was thinking of and see if that helps clarify or muddies the water more. It seems to me like a couple answers given in this thread may have been what I was getting at.

I was talking about Spades, or any game where extras (bags) can eventually give you negative points. In Spades you and your partner bid every hand how many tricks you think you can take. If you bid 6 for example you need to take at least 6 tricks. If you don't, you go negative 60. If you take 6 on the nose, you get 60. If you take more than 60 you still get the 60 but each additional trick (commonly called a bag) is tacked on to your score as a single unit. So bidding 6 and taking 7 would yield a score of 61, bidding 6 and taking 8 would give a score of 62, etc...

The bad thing about bags is that once you get the tenth bag you get penalized -100 points. So for example if you're at 369, bid 5, take 6 you would get +51 for the bid of 5 and extra trick taking you to 420 but you would lose 100 points from there for the tenth bag leaving your score at 320.

So even after the first hand the other team may be technically ahead but you'd rather have your score. For example, your team bids 4 and takes four for a score of 40. Your opponents bid 5 and take 9 for a score of 54. You'd clearly rather be the team that has 40 even though technically you're trailing on the scoreboard.
