The 2017 San Antonio Experience

Personally, I really don't see the need or interest in single sex events -- some days Stick might identify as a woman anyway. (lololol, just teasing)

There are far too few women players but they are just as capable as the men -- who wishes to draw Akiko Yazawa in any round in any event?

This year in San Antonio we had 6/72 women in the Championship Division, 14/42 women in the Advanced Division, and 10/23 women in the Limited Division. That is a total of 30/137. Very good numbers in comparison to most tournaments. We did nothing to specifically attract women, it just worked out that way.

And how did the ladies do?

In the Championship Division Antoinette-Marie Williams bested Leyla Zaloutskaya in the final -- believed by most to be the first time two women have ever played in the final of a major event.

Elena Evans won the Advanced Division and Patti Rubin won the Last Chance.

In the Limited Division Mary Kay Lively was the Finalist and Regan Lambeth won the Consolation.

So, quite the performance by the women.

And the San Antonio results followed a very good women's showing in the first event of the year -- the NY Metro -- where Carol Joy Cole was the Championship Finalist, Karen Davis won the Championship Consolation, and Leyla Zaloutskaya was 3/4 in the Championship Consolation.

The women are doing quite well. I think these accomplishments do much more to attract additional women players than any segregated event might.

Look for the Spring 2017 issue of the USBGF PrimeTime Backgammon magazine (to be posted April 1) to highlight some of these accomplishments by women.
