Men v. Women in Mental Games

One of my goals is to increase the participation of women in backgammon. However, I don't think that the way to do it is by segregating them or giving out a special gender based prize. I have had women ask me to start a women's only event and I don't think doing that would be sending the right message. We are doing some casual, more social events in MN to draw new players, of all persuasions. But for someone competing at the higher advanced and lower open level, I would rather encourage them to move up and increase their skill rather than coddle them.

Backgammon is not an easy game to master and you have to be prepared to study a lot and lose a lot along the way. Heck, even the upper echelon can only expect to cash about 40% of the time. We had a female player move up to open for the first time at our Viking Classic tournament this past weekend. She got hammered and was very discouraged. We talked about it though, and I was able to encourage her to keep trying as that transition from intermediate to open can be rough.

We had 14 female players out of 81 at our tournament, a little over 17%. A total of 43 places cashed in all events combined, 5 of those cash positions were won by women, 11.6%.
