Using the doubling cube in Chess

A similar idea is that the cube more than doubles the stakes

Mathematically, yes. I considered that, but it has the disadvantage of being less clear what the current game value is (unless new cubes are made). With my approach, the value shown on the standard cube is always the number of points for which the game can be cashed.
