Also from Gammonlife, the source of the video Leo linked:
(Illegal move: In the move above, the roll was 6-3. Savio tried different plays but when he moves one of the dice out of the way to place a checker on a point he accidentally flips over the 6 to a 5 - it is clear to see this happens unintentionally, and it seems to go unnoticed by Savio, Pan and the referee, Luigi Villa, as the die is not put back on a 6 immediately. Savio continues to try different moves using a 6 but when he tried a move with a 5, he is told to put the checkers back to the original position. Then, according to Savio after the match, Villa tells him he must play the numbers showing on the dice, a 5 and 3 and not a 6.)
Since in the video, there is much confusion, including Pan putting Savio's checkers back in a wrong initial positon (why was he allowed to touch them?) which Savio then corrected to the right location, by showing that last move he had played a 53 bringing two men down from the midpoint. (That is the case--the match record shows that is indeed the prequel to this position.) Given the tension that must have been present, since the cube was on 4 and this was to be the final game, I can understand why at that point Savio became flustered, perhaps believing he'd misread his dice due to stress or whatever. After all this confusion, with the referee then insisting he play the roll he sees, or even if he was just sitting there not intervening, I give Savio the benefit of the doubt here regarding his honesty and good faith.
I agree with those here saying that checker set-ups must be unambiguous, done with one hand, reset to original before another trial play is set up, etc.; but one of the sources of the ambiguity here was the opponent moving the checkers of the player on turn. This is a separate line item in the rules, and maybe we can all use a "friendly reminder" not to do that, even to be helpful, such as playing a forced re-entry number for the opponent so they don't have to reach across the board. In that situation, it's unlikely to lead to any harm, although it's sloppy procedure. But in situations similar to what we see here, it can lead to more cans of worms being opened than we can ever hope to contain. If it's your opponent's turn, let your opponent do all the (one-handed, unambiguous) moving and resetting!
