Without taking sides on this issue, I just want to point out that some care needs to be taken, legally, with the distinction between
1. public information, and
2. a particular record of an event being "in the public domain."
Back in January, Bill Riles said that "Obviously, streamed matches enter the public domain." Legally, however, the video record does not enter the public domain merely by virtue of being exposed to the general public. "Public domain" has a precise meaning in copyright law, and for example, if the video recording really is "in the public domain" then anybody can take it, alter it, sell it, or do anything they like with it without asking for anybody's permission for anything.
For comparison, news articles and news videos are by default copyrighted and are not in the public domain, even though the basic facts become public knowledge as soon as the news breaks. Copyrighted material does not become public domain until either (1) a bajillion years go by or (2) the copyright owner explicitly puts it into the public domain.
