Is this that difficult for the average player to get right?

A lot of your answer depends on how you define the "average" player.

One thing that makes your question difficult to answer is that ANY PLAYER should have some problem with this play, as it is not obvious at all what the right play should be. So I believe this is a difficult play for anyone.

But my guess is that you are asking if the average player would consider hitting off the 5 point, and I am sure that Open players would strongly consider that play; intermediate players might quickly dismiss that play or not even look at it; and "casual" players might not even consider it.

Most good players would see the 6/5* option immediately (quiz factor or not), but I can tell you that when I first looked at it, that was my inclination.

Naturally my curiosity got the best of me and I put this in XG and was not surprised to find out that the decision is very close.

So, when you have a very close decision, it seems pretty logical that ANY player would have difficulty with the play.
